As parents at schools throughout the Greater Houston area, fight for crossing guards, one school is praising theirs.
McDowell has been on the job at Commonwealth Elementary for nine years. For the last six years, she has made signs with a message every day. “Stand tall, be strong, and be proud.” McDowell said is her favorite message. “For every day of school, I have a different sign.”Students, parents and school faculty say they appreciate McDowell’s work.
Alpana Phakkar is a mother in the neighborhood. She said McDowell means so much to her. “So much. So much. Really. She knows the names of the children. So, imagine how attached she is to the children,” Phakkar said.Cindy Snyder, assistant principal at Commonwealth Elementary School, said, “She forms relationships, which is so important in elementary school and no matter what situation, she remains calm.
Latecha Bogle, principal at Commonwealth Elementary School, added, “She is a ray of sunshine, we love the fact that for many of our boys and girls, she is the first face they see, the first voice they hear, and she is always inspirational, positive and always willing to go the extra mile.”Accompanying Vivian is a neon-plastic turtle that holds her signs every day.Copyright 2022 by KPRC Click2Houston - All rights reserved.
