“Student journalists are doing important work, reporting on key issues of our time, and speaking to and for their generation, which is experiencing this moment of history in a unique and transformational way,” Hadar Harris, executive director of the Student Press Law Center, tellsin an email. “Attempts to censor them will always fail as today there are many ways for students to get their stories out into the world.
“Years after I had graduated from UMass, while my case wound its way through the Massachusetts Supreme Court,” Vishniac says via email, "strangers with bad politics and worse boundaries tried to contact me to berate me on Facebook." But student journalists are committed to telling the truth in their reporting, no matter the potential consequences. “I think the experience made me a better journalist,” says Thompson. “People are not always going to like the stories you write, but that doesn’t mean you don’t write them."
She continues, "I was confident in our standing in this case because my work was grounded in truth. It is frustrating when things like this happen, but a thriving community needs good journalism.”
