The Minister for Further and Higher Education Simon Harris has said a new public sector pay deal is needed before the end of the year. Addressing the TUI annual congress he said 'let's get in the room and let's have that discussion'

During an address to the Annual Congress of the Teachers' Union of Ireland in Wexford, he said that the Government needed to respond to the current pressures of inflation by sitting down with public sector unions and commencing a discussion on a public sector pay agreement.

"Let's get in the room and let's have that discussion about how we hammer out a pay deal for public servants before the end of the year," he added.Earlier, the conference heard calls for pay increases to help offset the impact of rising inflation. "Inevitably, given inflationary pressures, significant pay increases are reasonably being sought by workers, including teachers, lecturers, and other educators," Mr Gillespie said.
