East High School students hold walkout in protest of new transgender sports law

“A lot of energy, a lot of flags, a lot of signs expressing how they’re feeling, about this particular bill, and the chants, if you caught nothing but the chance you’d know students are in support of letting all students play regardless of how they identify,” said Salt Lake City School District spokeswoman Yándary Chatwin.

East High School students walked out of school Friday around 11:45 a.m., waving bright flags and chanting, “Let them play.” The state legislature recently passed HB 11, which bans transgender girls from competing on female sports teams.The movement was led by students, and the school administration knew about their plans ahead of time. District leaders believe this is an important way students can get involved.

“It’s actually not unusual for students to walk out or demonstrate," Chatwin said."Our students tend to be pretty involved civically, and we view this as a really important part of their educational experience, to exercise their first amendment rights and speak out for what they believe in."

Omg no wonder they aren't learning anything. Teaching them what bathroom to use. What a bunch of crap.

The kids don’t care about transgender kids participating in sports. The only people upset are middle aged white men. I’m old enough to remember when they thought girls sports was also an abomination.

I guarantee you the majority of these students are lemmings, just in the protest bandwagon for attention. I was in high school once. They are oblivious.

We walked out too in 1996 because they banned all clubs rather than let the kids start a gay club.

Ignorant, indoctrinated fools. For over a century, women fought through Suffrage, ERA, Title IX and and more to establish their rights, equality and recognition. It's really odd to see high school girls setting that all aside so they can wallow in the joy of being a SJW.

Those walk out are worthless because did you realize that allowing transgenders in women sports will kill their sport, I wonder where the women rights organizations are, how come you not fighting against this nonsense.

So “fair” means not competing with trans girls (who have their testosterone suppressed through HRT), but with AFAB trans BOYS (who are taking regular doses of testosterone)? Good logic. Be real: this has never been about “fair,” it’s only ever been about transphobia and hate.

The next step, if these young people are serious in their support, would be to boycott sports in which their transgender classmates are prohibited from participating.

Opinion: Patrick Henry High School should have had a full debate before dropping advanced classesSchools should worry about equity implications when students studying the same topic are on different tracks. But decisions should not be unilateral. Decisions to drop courses shouldn't be made by individual schools. They should be made at the district level. Absolutely. San Diego Unified really dropped the ball here. This move does not increase trust with families or ultimately benefit students.
