Rhodes University will honour will four remarkable South Africans at its first face-to-face graduation ceremonies since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. | MaliDayimani

On Wednesday, the university will confer a degree of Doctor of Laws on The Right Honourable Lord Peter Hain of Neath. Hain's honorary award will be presided over by the vice-chancellor of Robert Gordon University in Scotland, Professor Steve Olivier, a Rhodes University alumnus.He was educated in South Africa at Hatfield Primary School and Pretoria Boys High School until he fled the country at the age of 16 after both his parents were jailed for their activism work.

Hain has used his position as a political leader in the UK to call for a ban on global institutions and companies that facilitated state capture in South Africa. Rhodes University vice-chancellor, Professor Sizwe Mabizela, said:"Our nation will remain eternally indebted to you for all your sacrifices in fighting against apartheid and for being a global voice of the voiceless majority in South Africa.

Quarraisha Abdool Karim, co-founder of the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa, demonstrated for the first time that antiretrovirals could prevent HIV infection. These findings were highlighted by the journal Science as one of the top 10 scientific breakthroughs in 2010.
