Herry Wirawan, a former principal of an Islamic boarding school for girls in the city of Bandung, was handed the death penalty by the Bandung High Court, overruling a lower court's sentence of life in prison, according to Reuters.
Prosecutors who sought to have Wirawan sentenced to death and chemical castration appealed the Bandung District Court ruling.Wirawan pleaded guilty to raping at least 13 students between the ages of 11 and 14 in violation of the Child Protection Law and Criminal Code. The rapes allegedly took place in several locations between 2016 and 2021, including at the school, in hotel rooms, and in rented apartments.
As part of his previous sentence, the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection was ordered by the court to pay 331 million rupiah, equivalent to just over $23,000, in compensation to the girls.
Does anyone want to send this to Ketanji Brown Jackson and explain that this is how a higher court should rule?
