On Friday, a music teacher from Newark and an instructional coach from Freehold each received a $25,000 Milken Educator Award, considered the Oscar of teaching.

of Newark’s Arts High School gymnasium on Friday, she addressed her students, who were giving her a standing ovation and screaming so loud she worried they would ruin their vocal cords.

Another state teacher, Taylor Matyas, an instructional coach at Laura Donovan Elementary School in Freehold Township, also won the award, which includes an expense-paid trip to Los Angeles and a spot in a 2,800-person network of other Milken award winners. Recipients are chosen by state panels of educators, and they do not know they have been nominated, so the awards are unexpected.

A ninth-year teacher who has taught at Arts High School since 2018, Lagasca, 30, lives in Englewood. She speaks with deep respect for her students and their resilience as they returned to school after months away.
