Opinion: 'In telling our stories of survival we take back spaces of silence, erasure and violence,' writes nupquʔak·ǂam̓ | Troy Sebastian. 'This is not an even road to travel.'

. It should not take the words of the Pope or the revelation from Tk’emlúps te Secwe̓pemc for Canadians to believe survivors of residential school. Years of testimony at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, hundreds of pages of the final report and 94 Calls of Action should be enough. The record has been established, the testimony given. There is no going back.

This was a hard day for many. There are those who rightfully want nothing to do with the Catholic Church and would rather never hear from them again. There are also those who want or perhaps need to hear an apology in order to redress generations of Catholic gaslighting. No matter how you are doing upon hearing the words from Rome, do not forget that you are important, you are loved and you are believed.

This is a solemn challenge for all in this country: It is time to demonstrate that survivors of residential school are important, are believed and are loved. It is time for the 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Final Report to be enacted. It is time for the archives to be opened, for the compensations to be paid, for our cultural materials to be returned.
