A Hammarsdale woman has started an educational initiative to eradicate illiteracy levels in her community. The initiative is run by community volunteers through a specialised curriculum developing school readiness.
The 31-year-old spends most of her weekends with about 20 children - most of their faces caked in dust - in a low-cost house built by the municipality, where she teaches them how to read and write and helps them with homework.'I believe that a child is raised by the whole community, and this is my small contribution."
"I strongly believe that by exposing a child to the right story, one can refer to the events and essential facets of narrative to teach them something about the world," she said.
