Shack dwellers’ movement Abahlali baseMjondolo said it was unfair that only Mani’s purchases of cigarettes and alcohol have been highlighted when she also bought cellphone airtime, blankets, cookware

Sibongile Mani, the Eastern Cape student who was convicted of theft in February, after spending R818 000 of the R14 million accidentally deposited into her bank account, has been sentenced to five years in prison.

She likened Mani to a “white-collar criminal”, saying it was well known that this “type of offence is tightening its grip in South Africa and threatens the stability and wellbeing of its people”. Mani has a degree in accounting, a diploma in internal auditing, a post-graduate certificate in education and is studying towards an honours degree in education.Mani and her supporters burst into tears after hearing her sentence, then huddled together to pray. About 100 members of the Pan Africanist Student Movement of Azania , to which Mani belongs, have supported her at each court appearance.

“She has emerged from a very poor background. After passing matric she could not proceed straight to university because there were no funds. She got a job, took care of her family, she made little savings to get to university and she managed to do just that,” said Pakade.

The Independent Komani Residents’ Association said that in transferring millions of rands to Mani’s bank account, Intellimali had “exploited her vulnerability as a student from a disadvantaged background”.

Are we now saying spending what isn't yours is not a crime? Two wrongs don't make a right

WoW what a KaK defence? Then you also can argue and say: when a person don't have money to buy food he or she can just walk in to any Shoprite order a roasted chicken and eat it before you reach the pay point? And say it was not shoplifting because you where hungry? 👎⚖️

Must have been a very big stomach if it needed R 800 000 to fill.

Then she bought fake hair and booze to fill up that empty stomach

🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️I don’t think her lawyer is fit enough to twist things around.

🤣🤣🤣

It doesn't then give you🙈the right to help yourself to R800k💰💸💳which does NOT belong to you⁉😲😭😎

Nonsense

Must have been very hungry to feed on R800k.

800k for an empty stomach? That is plain simple bullshit.

Did that Attorney really say that?

Bank error in your favor. Collect R14m. The negligent party must take accountability for their balls up.

Now we know why she lost the case.

Pathetic excuse

Mani-to-Money.... let Mani finish her studies if she haven't....help her find a job quickly.....settle down with her to negotiate how to pay back that money.

And she bought weaves and iPhone to fill the stomach😂😂😂

Yoh…. Then she chowed 800k …🤦‍♀️😂

The girl saw everybody including comrades, were 'eating'and she knew that the country was on a wing and a prayer in terms of morals people were mercilessly rapacious, so she could n't resist.

That person who worked at NASFAS try steal the money transfer to unknown tracing share after why all of you targeting a student instead investingate properly got proof after that that's nonsense lazy stubbornness investigator's.

Then yangena, all hell broke loose. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The poor girl is going to jail because of her attorney what kind of argument is this maar mxm

And...

Thank god she was sitting

There is no doubt that mani spent money deposited into her account by mistake, as evidence is overwhelming. But she does not deserve to go to prison, instead she should pay money back.

A great platform that can make everybody smile, for my first time hearing about making money online, I thought is fake buy when I try it I realise that is real so I won’t keep silent I need everyone to smile like me GAODwyer01
