Nothing cries patriotism more than forcing someone to pledge to you against their will.
During my teaching internship in Alabama I my professors told me that all teachers are expected to pledge allegiance to the flag if there is even one student in the classroom and not doing so would get you in trouble with the admin. I didn't fight it, but found it to be very off.
