Masks will be optional for children under the age of 5 in New York City schools and daycare facilities starting early next month if the city’s Covid-19 numbers keep showing a low-risk level. “We want to see our baby faces,” said Mayor Eric Adams.

From New York to California, an increasing number of states are lifting statewide mask mandates as the Omicron wave recedes. Federal public-health officials, meanwhile, continue to recommend mask-wearing in public indoor settings in much of the country.

“We want to see our [babies’] faces,” he said at a press conference, where he noted the city is in a low-risk environment. The new guideline, which will affect children between the ages of 2 and 4, will go into effect April 4.
