I looked down at the lacklustre ‘D’ grade I’d achieved on GSCE maths paper and felt relief that it was over.
So when I saw a recent proposal from the Department for Education at the end of last month to ban pupils from accessing student loans if they fail their maths or English GCSEs, I was shocked.would have been blocked from attending university because I didn’t have the means to support myself. My lack of confidence with numbers started when I moved primary schools in year four. My new class was moving decimal places with flashcards – weeks ahead of the curriculum at the school I’d come from.
My parents even offered me £100 if I passed with a C but no threats or incentives could give me the confidence and knowledge to pass. As founder and executive chair of the Sutton Trust education charity, Sir Peter Lampl, said: ‘Universities are the key route to social mobility, so it is crucial that young people who have the potential to benefit from higher education are able to do so, whatever their background.
Thankfully, I made it to university without a maths GCSE and flourished in a learning environment where I could pick modules I was passionate about and motivated by.
