Most eighth-graders at my son’s school chose to keep their masks on last week, even when outside. And not for the reasons you might imagine.

In the case of my son and his friends, their classmates are likely not imagining them with acne and braces behind their masks. But they are 13 and 14 years old: The acne and braces are there. Fuligni said it made sense my son and his friends would be reluctant to remove their masks in front of one another at first. These kids didn’t just go through a pandemic over the past two years“Their faces are going to look different,” he said. “They are going to have acne, some may have whiskers, their voices are different.”

“That’s the thing about the adolescent brain,” he said. “It’s designed to learn and grow and adapt to new circumstances. They are going to do beautifully.”
