Local flavour: Malaysian perspectives of practice, design and theory are significant in building a body of architectural content related to the country’s context. – IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star
What else can education do? Education plays a central role in advocacy of an ethos that is important in contributing positive impact to where we live. While these perspectives are important, Malaysian, or more broadly Asian, perspectives of practice, design and theory are significant in building a body of architectural content related to the Malaysian context.Emphasis should thus be given on Malaysian-ising the curriculum to pave the way forward.
We can imagine a tropical house being a built form which is open to the sky and in harmony with nature, has minimum glazing, is surrounded by a garden, has wide overhangs, and is naturally ventilated. This calls for the need to curate knowledge of local tropical architecture, and to theorise knowledge of regionalism that is place-responsive.
Being a post-structuralist in world view, I see merits in advocating tropicality in the design of the curriculum, and viewing this as a mutable position to respond to the ever-changing problems of the built environment.Perhaps, it is time for universities to advocate for themes of study aligned to significant drivers of progress and innovation of ideas and knowledge.
