Almost 1000 children have contracted gastro in February after a spate of outbreaks at childcare centres and schools across NSW.

NSW Health Executive Director of Health Protection Dr Richard Broome said almost 1000 children and more than 210 staff members have fallen ill after a “substantial increase” in the number of outbreaks.Ryan Stuart “The best response is to keep children home if unwell and practice good hand hygiene,” Professor Booy said.

However, it is likely cases significantly increased as more children returned to the classroom and childcare centres after the summer break.Viral gastroenteritis symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, abdominal pain, headache and muscle aches and can take up three days to develop, usually lasting between one and two days, NSW Health said.
