NSW will scrap almost all pandemic restrictions from next week, including masks in schools, but a winter surge in influenza and COVID-19 virus cases could see some public health measures return.
From next week the bulk of pandemic measures in schools will be removed, with students allowed to mix more freely across classes and year groups and parents will be permitted back onto school grounds.More than 80 students at Kemps Creek Public School will learn from home after an outbreak emerged at the school and two year groups at Carlingford Public were switched back to remote learning last week.
“If there is an aggressive influenza outbreak, combined with a new variant obviously we have to be agile in our thinking and revisit measures that kept us safe such as masks and QR codes,” Customer Service Minister Victor Dominello said. “We need to plan for new variants. We need to have a flexible and proportionate in our response with a focus on aged care, hospitals and disability.”

Activities such as assemblies and school camps will also return. “If we had a severe flu outbreak we have a suite of measures that the public understands that we could use. We could strongly recommend wearing a mask indoors, and people are likely to come back on board. The use of masks and any restrictions would need to be combined with strong public health messages,” Dr Coatsworth said.
