'Ski week for me has always = rich kid privilege.'

School districts in Mill Valley, San Rafael, Albany, West Contra Costa and Los Gatos all have one. San Francisco and Oakland don't. Many independent schools around the Bay Area have it, but not parochial schools.

It's also commonly referred to in colloquial terms as"ski week" because the break falls in prime ski season — though many Bay Area parents say that moniker is elitist. Samantha Schoech of San Francisco concurs:"I hate the term 'ski week.' It's so clueless. I remember when they introduced it at my public school in the early '80s and my mom was like, 'Only in Marin.'"confirms the scheduling quirk dates back about 40 years in Marin, but has since spread to many other suburbs where teachers were dealing with sick calls from kids being pulled out of school by their parents.
