PETALING JAYA: The Education Ministry has written to the Election Commission (EC) requesting that classrooms reserved for the SPM 2021 exams not be used as polling centres in Johor.

Education Minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin said the EC needed to use 151 secondary schools in Johor as polling centres but the ministry was not in favour of the buildings being used as polling stations.

“We are aware that the EC has an Act which allows them to use any premises that are needed. However, we have discussed with them that if they need to use these schools, we want to ensure that the main exam rooms are not used," said Radzi. “This is because this year’s SPM exams are not like before, where the distance between the tables was 0.8m. Now, it’s 1.5m,” he added, saying that in addition to being reserved for the exams, most of the classrooms are also used as alternative, special and isolation rooms, therefore, utilising most of the classrooms for SPM 2021.
