Among today's COVID-19 news: U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy said Friday morning on Twitter that he, his wife and two children have tested positive, as more states move to end mask mandates.

Washington's statewide indoor mask mandate, one of the few left in the country, will lift in most places on March 21, including at schools and child care facilities, Gov. Jay Inslee said Thursday. Washington and New Mexico announced they were dropping their indoor mask mandates Thursday, leaving Hawaii as the only state that has yet to set a date for lifting its mandate.

Like the rest of the country, both states have seen a steady decline in both COVID cases and hospitalizations since the height of the omicron surge last month. “It’s not a political decision,” Lujan Grisham said. “It’s the right time for us. We are conquering COVID and we’ll keep doing that.” ►Authorities made arrests from New York to Delaware to California Thursday as they rounded up 10 men accused of fraudulently reaping more than $4 million in unemployment benefits during the coronavirus pandemic.

'The priority going forward is to try to hold down serious cases and deaths among the elderly,' Shigeru Omi, Japan's top health advisor, told reporters after the panel's meeting. Kyoto University professor Hiroshi Nishiura estimated that the Omicron wave would claim 4,339 lives between January and April 20, with more than 70% of the victims in their 80s or older.
