University of Limerick building Image: Shutterstock University of Limerick building Image: Shutterstock THE UNIVERSITY OF Limerick has countered calls for it to introduce more stringent fines for students who might engage in anti-social behaviour off-campus, arguing it already has sanctions in place to try to tackle any such behaviour by its students.
It has also sought “community involvement in the education of all students at the beginning of each year about living respectfully within the community”. “Along with the ongoing expansion of the UL student intake with little or no regard to the lack of adequately managed student accommodation to house them during the academic year, the residents would like to remind the senior management of UL that our concerns have not gone away.”
The group has also sought “a time frame for the recruitment of an independent person to oversee off campus code of conduct that will liaise with the residents, UL, the gardaí, and Limerick City and County Council”. UL has used public funds to provide garda patrols in off-campus estates but the university has so far refused to answer questions as to how much it has spent on the patrols.
