For a start, the pre-federation single-income family dynamic has been transformed.
The ABS data estimated there were about 416,000 one-parent families with dependents where the parent was employed.NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said the school day shouldn't be set in stone. A driving force behind the Premier's argument is making school more compatible with modern lifestyles.Don Carter, a senior education lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney, said answering that needed to be put before debates about hours.
"It might be the case that in the morning you have certain age groups looking at doing some of the particular key learning areas like English and maths, literacy and numeracy, then moving on to other types of key learning areas and activities in the afternoon.
Kids have had enough disruptions. Just let them be. How about we start by stop making them screen RAT’s and no masks
Our EB has us starting at 8:15 and finishing at 3:10, but the payoff is we get an extra week in the mid-year break.
You try getting them up once they reach 13 yrs onwards as a parent these days I wish all the luck in the world.
The Premier of NSW thinks that he has come up with something brilliantly new but it ain't. In Queensland the schools were given a choice to take it on extra hrs to teach kids. But in many schools it failed because as kids get older they have there own minds they sleep in. You try
Nyuk nyuk nyuk. Parrotitt at it again ((🥴))
All research says less school will lead to better outcomes. Dom wants to make schools baby sitters so when he is voted out his wife can work to support the childcare bill he has. This decision lacks logic and evidence
Not good for kids. Not good for teachers.
Teachers aren't babysitters. We already use before and after school hours for planning and preparing. When are we supposed to do that if they increase face to face time? Good luck retaining any quality teachers if you take this path.
Great but EVERY School kid should be doing 2 hours of physical EXERCISE per day, even walking
What about students who need to travel on public transport or kids in rural areas that go by a school bus🤔. Hope that Vic don’t consider this. My grandchildren would have to get up at 5am to have breakfast, get ready for school to catch the bus at 5.50am to be there by 7 😡🤬
Perhaps reducing work hours to finish at three will allow parents to spend more quality time with their kids rather than the rushed morning/evening routines. This isn't actually improving anyone's quality of life.
I work at schools (as a contractor). Often, teachers are at work an hour or 2 before they are paid to be there, and then a couple of hrs after. The paperwork is nonstop, and it's useless. They are burning out and leaving en masse. Politicians are the reason it's like this.
If the government would actually give its workers a decent pay increase and stop allowing the daily cost of living to increase so much kids might actually get to have more time to be kids.
In my view, 9am until 3pm doesn't work,' Isn't this his problem - it's all about what he thinks - never evidence based.
Is he on drugs? This goes against all the evidence over many years against longer hours at school.
Can't have parents leaving work early and stop making money for Gerry Harvey, can we? 😘
No thought has gone into this ,school zones and peak traffic don’t mix ,rural kids will have to get up at 4.30am to get to school at 7.00am ths is going to make it easier 🖕🏼🖕🏽🖕🖕🏻🖕🏾🖕🏿💩🦠🇦🇺☠️
If logistics around working parents is the main driver here, maybe we should look at shortening the work day as opposed to extending the school day.
I get it came with privilege, but my school started at 8:45, I did sports every afternoon and then 30 mins of ‘homework’ at school before I was collected by my folks at 5:30. This just makes sense to me. I exercised, I didn’t have to study at home, both parents worked a full day.
