Students of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba , on Friday held a peaceful protest against the incessant occurrence of accidents in the University community. The development comes a few hours after a collision between two trucks claimed the lives of three persons on Thursday evening.According to reports, those who died in the accident include a graduate of the institution who had come for his clearance in order to proceed with the mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps programme.
To curb the incessant trailer accidents around the area, students had earlier erected a barricade on January 24, 2021, when a truck belonging to one of the companies of Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, killed some students and indigenes of Akungba-Akoko.However, the barricade was removed by police after that period, leading to an escalation of accidents along that section. As a result of Thursday's tragedy, students are calling for the return of barricades on roads around the school.
Meanwhile, some of the students took to their social media handles to condemn the accident which occurred around the school. The students trended hashtags such as #SaveAAUA #SaveAkungba to demand the dualisation and levelling of the Akungba hilly road which is perceived as the cause of the accidents in the area.In January 2021, a similar accident occurred claiming nine lives. SaharaReporters reported at the time that three siblings were among the victims, who lost their lives in the crash.
