It’s an unusual approach for a public school, but one championed by many educators and psychologists as a way to harness the best of co-ed and single-sex schooling | JordsBaker

Marrickville High, a co-ed public school where boys outnumber girls by more than two to one, is introducing single-sex maths and science classes for students in year 7.

This leaves the few co-ed high schools in the area with a lopsided enrolment; at Marrickville, Leichhardt and Kingsgrove North, at least two-thirds of the school population is male, which further discourages parents from sending their daughters there. “It’s a different way to approach a [subject] area that doesn’t traditionally attract girls,” she said. “For me the two [benefits] are keeping my daughter engaged in STEM, but also attracting more females generally to the school.”

The approach is based on the belief that boys and girls learn differently, but benefit from social interaction. “It took about four years to filter into the community, and we noticed the change. The two take-outs were we changed from two-thirds out of area, to virtually none, and the [gender balance shifted to] almost 50-50.”
