School board to hold public hearing Monday on proposal

OAKLAND — Oakland Unified School District administrators are proposing to permanently close as many as 19 schools over the next two years because of declining enrollment, according to a preliminary draft released by a school board member.

In a memo sent to families after the list was released, the district’s chief budget officer, Lisa Grant-Dawson, outlined why the district administration is considering school closures and consolidation. Enrollment in Oakland’s elementary schools varies widely, from a low of 110 to more than 700. Grant-Dawson projects that next year, the district will have 19 elementary schools with fewer than 304 students, making them financially unsustainable.

Hutchinson, who opposes the closures, rejected the district’s reasoning, noting the memo did not specify how much money would be saved by closing the schools on the list. The prospect of closing schools has long been a point of controversy in Oakland. After the school board rejected an option of closing schools last fall, the state ruled in December that Alameda County could intervene in Oakland Unified’s budget process.

In response, the school board on Jan. 12 directed Oakland Unified administrators to draft a list of schools that potentially could be closed.

Preliminary list of Oakland school closures released without consent of OUSDOakland Unified has a preliminary list of schools it wants to close to help cut costs and deal with a budget shortfall. The list was not meant to be published and was distributed internally until someone disclosed it. Sure, that’s what the problem is, not saying that optimum school size is humongous. Optimum for $, not for kids. This is poorly written. Parents were not outraged about the release, but about it’s contents.
