Speeding fines in February last year almost doubled on the year before with the NRMA finding there was a 95 per cent increase.

There were 17,494 speeding fines in school zones issued in February 2021 compared to 8947 in February 2020.With school zones applying from today and most students returning to class next week, the NRMA is calling on drivers to "adjust their behaviour".

He also flagged with the resurgence of COVID-19, more parents would be choosing to drop their kids at school instead of using public transport.There were a number of school zones in NSW that saw an alarming jump in fines year-on-year.They also jumped on Bunnerong Road in Eastgardens from 525 in 2020 to 1057 in 2021.Fines on Avoca Street in Randwick increased from 170 in 2020 to 397 in 2021.

"If you're walking younger children to school, it is a fantastic opportunity to practice safe behaviours together. Hold their hand the whole way; point out and explain any dangers on the way such as cars reversing out of driveways and safely crossing roads," he said. "For older children walking to school alone for the first time, we recommend mapping out a route together with safe crossings and practising the route with parents or older siblings before school returns."
