On Jan. 10, the McMinn County School Board voted 10-0 to remove the graphic novel from an eighth-grade language arts curriculum, citing foul language, nudity and copyright issues.
Parkison said two or three board members came by his office to discuss the book and its"rough, objectionable language." One board member, Tony Allman, said in the meeting that educators"don't need to enable or somewhat promote this stuff," according to the transcript, and cited the book's author's past history of creating graphics for"Playboy."
reached out to McMinn County School Board members for comment, but did not hear back at the time of publication.says"Maus" is a graphic memoir, meaning it's based on a true story and the experiences of the author’s Jewish family during the Holocaust.
Really? Hiding something else that has happened in history! Smh
Ban it no...Move it to the high schoolers -yes.... But there are better books for 8th graders - like the classic one written by a girl their age - 'The Diary of Anne Frank'... I also question if the 'graphic' novel genre is the best way to teach the Holocaust. Try USCShoahFdn
Will they be considerin this book to get the kids started on…
🤦
And this—- On HolocaustMemorialDay ? 'We cannot change what happened anymore. The only thing we can do is to learn from the past and to realise what discrimination and persecution of innocent people means.' ottofrank HolocaustRemembranceDay2022 neveragain neverforget
The headline is false. Read the minutes from the board meeting. Removing it from curriculum is not banning it. Most books are not in curriculum. They want to replace it with an alternative Holocaust book.
Too young for a graphic book.
