examining the 2014-2018 Equal Employment Opportunity Tabulation was similar to the Pew findings: it showed that about three in four teachers were white while nearly half of all public school students from pre-school to high school were students of color. In swiftly diversifying Houston, the Census analyzed 2014-2018 data and found that only 15% of high school students — but about 47% of city teachers — were white.
"People are entering the front door and exiting the side door pretty rapidly," Sharif El-Mekki, founder and CEO of the Center for Black Educator Development, told Axios.
Every time I read an Axios analysis under 'Why it matters', it never has anything to do with why it matters. And often, is just a statement about a political point of view devoid of any value that can be objectively assessed or measured.
The main reason for the teacher drop off is children coming to school are not properly prepared for learning and 2 people are scared to become a teacher because of the challenge's involved, my children told me not to become a teacher just one example.
Why are Republicans afraid of teaching factual history in school?
Lots and lots and lot of issues in education and goes with this one. Wow.
One parent says a lack of diversity among educators makes it more difficult for students of color and their families to express themselves during heated debates about what should be taught in schools. 'We may not feel safe.'
We need to focus more on making sure we have the right makeup of democrat and republican teachers before we focus on color which has no bearing. Ideology matters much more than color which matters zero.
The number of minority teachers gets even smaller when you dig into the numbers of math and science teachers.
How many are men
Teacher here. Most of us have generational wealth, and can deal with the horrible salary. Minorities often do not have that privilege, so they choose different careers where they can actually make a living.
There is no such thing a 'majority-minority.' A majority is by definition not a minority. That you would say this only further underscores the stunning level of ignorance that exists in America today.🤦🏻
If it’s the truth and likely to stay true then school districts should spend time on sensitivity training so that white teachers have a greater understanding of their students. We were brought up to white societies and therefore are tilted to behavior in “our” direction.
The gap of white teachers and min. kids is only going to grow. Less ppl are interested in teaching as a career for very good reasons. Low pay and lower respect from all sides is not a healthy recipe for recruiting the best. Why would anyone with a STEM degree go into teaching?
Because 15 year olds are much more diverse than 40 year olds. It is impossible for teachers to perfectly match the student demographics. Also, by far the biggest representation issue in teaching is the gender gap. How many boys go years without ever having a male teacher?
'Majority-minority' The whole country is going to be majority minority. Maybe it's time to update terms, or just stop counting people by race altogether.
Prob gotta take whoever is willing to do that job, right now. There are shortages everywhere... of all colors
Teachers also seem to have become less diverse in terms of politics.
'Majority-minority ' just doesn't seem right 😕... maybe it's just the public school education 🙄
