Under his leadership, a rebirth has begun at the Newark institution, a long-beleaguered, 519-bed medical safety net in the Central Ward.The boy wanted to get better for the sake of his worried mother.

That concern resonated with Shereef Elnahal in the summer of 2005. Like the teen, he had struggled with Type 1 diabetes, taking the condition seriously only to allay his own mother’s fears.
