I was not surprised when I noticed there was royal presence at the public presentation of two books lately in honour of Prof. R. Ayo Dunmoye, who retired recently from the Department of Political Science and International Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

What surprised me however was that the royal personage didn’t send a representative, rather he was there in person at the Assembly Hall of the ABU, Samaru, Zaria. As the editor of one of the books, Prof Kayode Omojuwa, was later to point out, the Emir of Zazzau, His Royal Highness Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, arrived at the venue some 30 minutes before the event was scheduled to begin.

One of the books presented at the event was Perspectives on Peacebuilding, Security and Development in Africa. The other was a Festschrift – Etches of a Mentor. The former is published in honour of Dunmoye by the Centre for Defence Studies and Documentation of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, under the leadership of Professor Usman Tar who’s also the editor. The latter was done in the Department of Political Science and International Studies, ABU, and was edited by Professor Kayode Omojuwa.

There were a few points I made in the past with regard to this. Opinion leaders, politicians, and the rest of them, who want something but don’t get it from the nation, can become bitter; they then turn around and point fingers at tribes other than theirs as the reason for all of the nation’s problems. But what they’re really pointing at are the elite with whom they engage in rivalry from the tribes they have in mind.
