I had the son who bit the teacher.

I had the son who couldn’t wait in line at the zoo, or sit through a meal in a restaurant, or play tag at recess.I had the son people stared at in the grocery store. We left parties early. We declined invitations to barbecues. We ate our food quickly, knowing we were on borrowed time.

I walked to him slowly, as if he was a rare delicate bird who would fly off into the clouds if I moved too fast. When I got close, he stood up and I folded him in my mother-wings, careful, so careful, not to wrap too tight. He eats pumpkin pie, spaghetti, tuna fish, steak, popcorn, pancakes, cheeseburgers, and chicken fingers. It didn’t come easily, or all at once.It was timers at the dinner table, wild chases through the store, watching the purple night sky turn itself over to a tangerine sun.Reckless grace, radical mercy, and tender resilience.Sometimes he screams when static comes on the radio.Sometimes I see a tall boy with a ball, and my heart squeezes just the tiniest bit.

I had the son who got ISS in 1st grade. David graduated high school with an Associates Degree, and is graduating college with his Bachelors in the spring. NO ONE understand the struggle unless they’ve lived this struggle but my kid? He’ll only ever know success. autismawareness

Hilarious how this guy wants a cookie for a defective kid.
