The NSW Education Minister has accused the teachers union of being “hell-bent” on hanging students out to dry for political purposes ahead of a strike | JordsBaker

Education Minister Sarah Mitchell has launched a blistering attack on the NSW Teachers Federation, accusing it of being a protection racket that fights transparency and is “hell-bent” on hanging students out to dry for political purposes.

“Families should not be punished by a protectionist racket focused solely on rewarding the federation’s longest-serving members whilst ignoring the needs of students.” Governments have long had difficult relationships with the federation. However, the previous two education ministers, Adrian Piccoli and Rob Stokes, kept it on side, partly because the union’s main focus during their tenure was a federal funding campaign.

JordsBaker The Liberals have been in power since 2011, no plans to address the teacher shortage in 11 years of being in office. Now it's the teacher's fault. Just add this to transport, icare, ferries, trams, selling off state, ICAC etc...

JordsBaker I'm so glad she is having trouble. Union protests are supposed to be disruptive.

JordsBaker This all seems a bit desperate smitchellmlc - trying to protect your cabinet position by demonstrating your anti-union cred to the new leadership?

JordsBaker I wish sometimes somebody would protect me from the 55+ hours I work each week, especially when it hits the 70 mark! Our union are not criminals, they are realists and know what we put in. Do you think we’ll wind back to 38 hours after a pay rise? Not bloody likely!

JordsBaker Free thinking, free expression, and using initiative are all things teachers promote in our children, but when teachers do it apparently that’s wrong. Teachers deserve our respect and valued for the important work they do

JordsBaker Negotiations are productive then?

JordsBaker What a joke of an article. Careful SMH - your partisanship is showing.

JordsBaker Mitchell has done nothing to stop the rot! Aust sliding further down OECD PISA rankings every measurement since project began in 2000. NSW slide furthest, fastest. Career politician Mitchell fiddles. Support the teachers!

JordsBaker Is she a teacher?

JordsBaker This is shocking. Reminds me of Bolte. Anyone remember him?

JordsBaker If smitchellmlc cares about students missing school, then she’d end the archaic SRE practice of taking all kids from class for an hour every Wed, so a minority can learn about angels, devils & magic. If she cares about education, she’d pay our overworked teachers a fair salary

JordsBaker Their former premier is under ICAC investigation and is being actively considered for a federal seat. Where’s the real protection racket…
