Director Yasmine Sherif, the Director of Education Cannot Wait, an UN-led initiative dedicated to advancing education in crisis zones traveled to Afghanistan over the last few days as part of an all-women team.

She came back with grim news for the country: “Afghanistan is on the brink of Collapse” she said on Wednesday in a press briefing from Islamabad airport, Pakistan’s capital.Sherif, a Swedish human rights lawyer, took part in a United Nations mission to assess the situation on the ground. She met with UN representatives in Afghanistan, civil society organizations as well as and the de facto authorities there, the Taliban.

As the country has been ruled by the Taliban for almost two months, the leader of Education Cannot Wait is making an appeal to the world to help Afghan people: “We need at least $1 billion being invested into the education sector to ensure that girls and boys can attend quality education in the continuous from primary to secondary school.”

Ahead of the Winter, she warned that the humanitarian situation is also dire in the country, and could soon get much worse. Sherif assesses that more than half of Afghanistan’s population doesn’t know where their next meal will be because of severe food insecurity, and the economic crisis in the country is so severe that teachers in the country are not being paid a salary.
