University athletics in Ontario are overwhelmingly white, from student athletes to coaches to administrators, according to a new report that found rampant systemic racism in varsity sports.
“This finding echoes extensive research on universities in Canada that show low rates of recruiting, hiring, retention, and promotion of racialized student, staff, and faculty, despite large pools of candidates to draw from,” the report reads. The racialized coaches who were able to jump through those hoops and get hired found the differences didn’t stop there, according to the report.
“Those in positions of power within the OUA, who often have no personal experience handling or witnessing instances of racism, are those who make decisions regarding anti-racist practice and policy,” the report reads. “The funnelling system into university for most sports relies heavily on private schools, clubs, and pay-to-play systems,” the report reads. “Each of these methods overwhelmingly select athletes from middle- to upper-class families with many opportunities and resources available to succeed in sport and university.”
“Recruiting racialized athletes will require some coaches to break well-established patterns of recruitment and spark new relationships with coaches, parents, and athletes,” the report reads.

Be interesting to compare the stats for the university sports teams to the overall population, Stats Can says about 29% of Ontario self identifies as a visable minority, and this study says 25% of Univ. sports teams are minority groups. Not way out of line.

A mistake to group all non-white races in the analysis. Black people are an embarrassingly small fraction of the population at a school like Western. Asian, Indian, etc... are culturally detached from sports like Football & Hockey that get the most $.
Because black kids are getting scholarships to the states 🤣 sports in Canada suck at the university level

Why is that a problem? White people are simply doing better in certain sports, big deal. You can go with ping pong, but you cannot force majority of Canadians to love that, not even about white, other than Chinese nobody else cares.
