Mass shootings soared during the pandemic—and researchers think Covid stress could be to blame

The stresses and pressures of the Covid-19 pandemic could have fueled the huge spike in U.S. mass shootings over the last year and a half, according to aThursday, amid a wider uptick in violent crime as officials move to tackle gun violence as a “serious public health threat.” Key Facts

In July 2020, there were 88 shootings, the researchers said, compared to 42 for the same month in 2019 and 45 in July 2018. Over the course of the pandemic, this means around one extra death and around seven more injuries from mass shootings every two days than would be expected before the pandemic.
