Many journalism students leave even the most prestigious private master’s programs with earnings too low to let them make progress paying off their debt, according to a WSJ analysis

and others have come to rely on the easy-to-access funds as a core element of students’ financing. Schools receive the money upfront, and taxpayers are on the hook for any loans that aren’t repaid.

“We don’t have a lot of control over the state of the industry,” said John Haskins, who oversees admissions and career services as dean of student life at Columbia’s journalism school. Willow Bay, dean of the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School, addressed the 2019 graduating class.Though Annenberg’s graduates from 2015 and 2016 had the largest gap between median debt and early-career earnings, the debt load dropped by nearly half in the next few years. The 2017 and 2018 classes had median loans of just under $36,000.

Graduates from the master’s program at the University of Missouri’s journalism school had a debt load among the lowest of any program with available data.“Graduate student debt is the thing that keeps me up at night,” Mr. Whitaker said. He attributed some of the earnings differential to the fact that undergraduates often complete their degrees with multiple internships and years of experience on student publications.

Mr. Whitaker said that employers are partly to blame for journalism graduates’ poor financial outcomes, and that he tells news-industry leaders, “I cannot in good conscience encourage students to go into this kind of debt if you cannot pay better.” Katie Dzwierzynski, a 2012 graduate of Medill's master’s program, has around $79,000 in student-loan debt, $62,000 of which is from graduate school.Katie Dzwierzynski said she was flattered when Medill offered her a scholarship of a few thousand dollars a decade ago. She lived at home to save money, and borrowed nearly $70,000 to cover the rest of her costs.

Some people work while going to school And don't use loans to live on.

Educational systems and corporations have learned how to use neuroscience to manipulate the masses. Their “Jedi Powers” are based in understanding what drives behaviors, feeding the human cravings for Dopamine. E.g., college football. One big, long Dopamine hit.

STEM disciplines have the opportunities

Easy solution- don’t get useless degrees that lead to largely low paying careers.

No one goes into journalism to make a lot of money.

Duh!

Since “journalism” has become nothing more than misguided opinionization and blatantly partisan mis- reporting, why pay someone to perpetuate it ? A problem of their own creation.

Precisely why they have to go woke to pay for their bills. Don't you think?

Well, done well, 90% of journalism is common sense. What exactly is happening in grad school journalism class besides perhaps an ego boost?

That's nothing new. If you want to make a living, forget journalism.

And who’s choice was it to pick a shitty major and take out debt?

After seeing how successful defunding education in America the past 40 years...and how foxs circus show has spread BS.....this is the next process in getting to a point when mis information isbinformation

Journalism vs Murdoch payment. WSJ always chooses the latter:)

… good enough to work in small markets. Told I’ve done a lot, but that’s as far as it goes. Twenty-six years and counting.

Largely due to a lack of critical thinking. 😉

Forget college and go to trade school

Someone needs to tell these kids that success in journalisn is based on effort, sacrifice and enterprise. An MA from Columbia has little to no effect on who can survive in this dynamic and competitive journalism world. A maid with a blog and a good idea can be just as successful.

This is not new news.

Chelsea Clinton had no problem landing a 600,000$ gig at NBC even without a journalism degree, what could it have been ?

How gullible do you have to be believe you're going to make enough to afford the Stafford Loan payments for a journalism master's degree? You'd think these guys would do a bit of, I don't know... Investigation?

Per sources

DEAD POETS SOCIEYY.

Too many journalism students, law and other humanities students subsidize expensive majors like engineering and research. That's bs. The cost of the degree needs to reflect the cost of teaching for that student.

this is terrible news

NainaGowda

Why does journalism school cost as much as it does? A school's cost needs to be free or reflect the earnings power of the degree received.

If only they could ‘do math’ they might have avoided this problem.

Good

Then don’t go to journalism school, or be a journalist, if you’re so concerned with your debt. Pretty simple.

I'm eating salad for breakfast everyone

funny folks are just starting to figure out what debt riddled looks like, in LOTS of professions

President Biden potus and democrats TheDemocrats TheDemCoalition HouseDemocrats 45+ million Americans and their families are waiting for you to cancel all student loan debt. It is economic justice. If you won’t do it, we’ll see you out at the ballot box. CancelStudentDebt

Honest question- will journalism school exist in 10 years? 20 years? With all the info/tech that is out there, what are the pros/cons of attending J-school? Would love to hear from those who have attended.

Los Angeles School District Will Require Eligible Students Get Vaccinated Against Covid-19The nation’s second largest school district will require all eligible students to show vaccination proof by January 10. Sadly some students come from homes where parents are not vaccinated. With Delta, students need more than a face mask and social distancing… they need all to be vaccinated to stop mass infection. Think Small Pox and Polio. This is wrong. Wrong on so many levels.
