The Herald's View: If future generations face awful questions of war and peace, they should look at the lessons of the past 20 years

The sickening shock of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the United States exactly 20 years ago is receding into the past but the question of how history will remember the event is more alive than ever.

“I think because of what’s been done, it’s probably less likely that something like September 11 will happen again,”. He said this outweighed the loss of 47 Australian lives and the deaths of many tens of thousands of US, NATO, Iraqi and Afghan troops and civilians. The invasion of Afghanistan was, until recently, seen as a more just war since the Taliban’s close links to al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden made it complicit, if not directly involved, in the September 11 attacks.

The federal government’s response here in Australia to the September 11 terror attacks has also been controversial. Security agencies were given unprecedented powers to conduct surveillance and detain citizens, which have been effective but which some argue infringe basic civil rights. If future generations face awful questions of war and peace, they should look at the lessons of the past 20 years.
