Larry, which strengthened into a Category 3 hurricane on Friday, has sustained winds of up to 120 mph as of Monday morning.
Larry is heading north and west over the open Atlantic and is forecast to approach Bermuda as a “large and powerful hurricane” during the next few days,to the NHC, though the organization warned it was too soon to properly evaluate the threat. Larry is not expected to make landfall over the U.S., though the NHC warned of “life-threatening surf and rip current conditions” along the East Coast from the middle to end of this week.
The organization described Larry as a “large hurricane,” with hurricane-force winds extending up to 70 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds up to 175 miles from the center. Larry is the third major hurricane—Category 3 or higher—of the Atlantic hurricane season.
