Hundreds of Queensland students are ditching mainstream classrooms and enrolling at independent distance education programs amid the COVID-19 pandemic. There has been a 12 per cent increase in the number of students studying at independent distance education facilities in Queensland
Enrolments increased by 434 full-time equivalent students up to 3,925 students between 2020 and 2021, the analysis shows. This gave them a "significant head start when learning moved from the classroom into the family dining room during Queensland's first COVID-19 lockdown in 2020". Deputy Principal Suzanne Fraser said the student population included a mix of people who were attracted to a Christian independent education, students who wanted flexible education to allow them to be in elite sports or arts, and those who found mainstream schools did not cater to their needs.
She said the school had enrolled students from rural and remote areas who were looking for education options because they were unable to attend boarding schools.
Not to meantion the children who were stuck overseas last year and are still unable to return to Australia. Many of them have enrolled too, whilst they wait to cone back to Australia.
