Director-General, Nigeria First project, Ezekiel Nya-Etok, has urged the adoption of stronger criteria before people are elected into political offices in Nigeria.

Nya-Etok, a member of the National Consultative Front Steering Committee, said being a Nigeria citizen and having an O-Level Certificate are insufficient to qualify a person to rule a country like Nigeria.

Speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels TV programme, yesterday, he said the first thing Nigerians must note ahead of the 2023 elections is the recruitment of leaders. He asked: “Why do we think anybody can be a councillor, a governor, a lawmaker or a President? There must be certain criteria that must be put in place for us to properly profile the recruitment of the CEO for the Nigeria project. Without that, we will not have a country.

He added: “It’s getting worse by the day and the criteria should be different from what we’ve had. That a man who wants to rule us should have minimum of an O-Level Certificate, be a Nigerian and belong to a party is not enough. It’s the law, but it should not be the criteria to run a country like Nigeria. Every Nigerian has to come to terms and agree that these can no longer be the criteria.

“As of today, what we are clamouring about is North or South, APC or PDP. And we seem to have become fixated, stuck and helpless. How will posterity judge us, if we keep quiet and watch.”
