It wasn't the Universitys fault it was his own. Its very sad and tragic but blaming every1 isnt right. My heart does go out to the family

Sad for the man's family, but he made his choices, no one else.

What a complete waste of a handsome young boy's life. Bar people must have seen how many drinks this boy had or seen what a state he was in and stopped the drinking and thus the tragic consequences.

Gorgeous lad. Sincere condolences to his family.

And its the University fault why?

There is a brilliant Belgian film out there called 'Ad Fundum'. Recommended watching for everybody who blame institutions while believing the students are still 'young and innocent'

It's a society thing, everything is someone else's fault. A terrible time for the family so sad, But to see so many of the people who drank with him, encouraged him to drink more, stand there and blame others for thier own actions.

Utterly horifying!

I was a landlady and I wish more young people realised that mixtures of alcohol drunk to excess will, at the very least, send them to hospital and, at worst as in this case, kill them! My heart goes out to the family! 😢

And since when is a Uni responsible for someone's innate stupidity?

Think they need educating that 'Some first-years drank vodka from a pig's head and bobbed for apples in a mixture of urine and alcohol' isn't normal 🙄

Although ultimately the responsibility of the individual, the hype by most Uni’s around promoting Fresher’s week and the pressure put on young people to fit in to the drinking culture by fellow students is huge. So sad.

Having heard some of the things these initiation 'ceremonies' entail, the issue of sanity raises itself. Would these people not be better off in padded cells? Still, good politician material I suppose.

Not the university’s fault, take responsibility for your own actions. It’s not common place to drink so much on a night out that people end up dead, this was tragic yes but just an act of stupidity & paying the ultimate price, his parents should be holding themselves accountable.

What occurred that night was tragic! However, this lad was, apparently, 20 years old. The University had no actual power to prevent what happened. They gave advice! How was it their fault? When we gave 18 year olds ‘adult rights’, we also gave them ‘adult responsibilities’!

Why. It was a personal choice. Okay peer pressure of other individuals played a role. But the university did not. We love to offset personal culpability, by blaming others, organisations, governments and authorities. Then bemoan the Nanny state.

So not the university to blame. They cannot treat these adults like children. Even though that's how they're behaving.😔😔😔

Unnecessary death!😥

Has anybody mentioned that the bar staff have a duty of care to their customers. The fact he was allowed to get that drunk drinking in public bars was criminal and those people that were still pouring drinks for him should be asking themselves why they did it.

There is absolutely a responsibility to teach teenagers about the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption but it shouldn’t be universities teaching it, it should be the parents! Take some responsibility for your own failings!

Such a waste of life 💔

'Hazing' is illegal in America under certain circumstances. It should be here too. Where is the amusement or entertainment in humiliation & bullying someone his way? But this is not all the university's fault imo There is a large degree of personal responsibility & risk here.

Why is it always someone else’s fault

Truth is Freshers is all about alcohol. These kids have just left home and with minimal money are faced with making friends fast, cheap booze and a horrendous drinking culture. Yes, the Uni Socs need to take responsibility.

He was an adult.

He was an adult and not the Uni to blame! I think they sell alcohol far to cheap in cities where there is loads of students which encourages them to binge drink

100 tripple vodkas between that few lads. Anyone would be dead.

Curious why we are only pushing this opioid problem when Alcohol is a bigger one in terms of deaths, related accidents, ect. Even prescription opioid pain relievers are legal (and that’s most of this federal push that’s aimed at doctors) so legal or not is irrelevant here.

Newcastle known to be full of boozers attracting young people. A culture created of partying and boozing which needs to change

So sad. Not sure how it is the fault of the uni though. Everyone has a mind of their own. Say no to stupid drinking games.

Sad but if this lad is old enough to go to university,he should have looked after himself.Dont blame the Uni but ask what his friends were doing 😢😢

Really sorry to read. University student union initiations put too much pressure on freshers and if you want to be in that team you can’t say no.

The only person to blame is whoever thought of the insane initiation challenges

This is devastating news 😔makes you wonder if it’s worth sending your child to uni 😔

Nothing to do with the university - parents should have instilled in him the dangers of alcohol in excess.

I thought cut price drink promotions were illegal. I also think universities should take some responsibility for their students welfare. They know is exactly what goes on in Freshers week and are therefore complicit when students are injured or die in these circumstances.

Not the universities fault.

It's very sad, but to blame the Uni is just passing the buck. YOU bring your kids up and try to instil some good behaviours, however he was 20, an adult. You can't blame anyone else - he wasn't forced

We need to have our own personals responsibilities on our doings and we should always be responsible regardless friends, trends, etc

A nice way too blow through a student loan at the tax payers expense

Lightweight

Why is it the universitys fault? Students are supposed to be intelligent! Just another example of dumb behaviour. I have no sympathy with idiots who do this sort of thing, they should know better.

Always somebody else’s fault. Tragic story but wrong to blame the Uni. People have to take personal responsibility, same as when they fall into rivers & then that there’s outcry there was no fencing.

😡

so dad comes out and critisizes uni..........for goodness sake! Your son was to blame but where were YOU when it came to instilling sense? Everyone's a victim, someone else's fault.........always.

I was somewhat staggered to see the lad’s father on the news, blaming the university whilst all the lads who had been out with him and egged him on into drinking that much stood around him...

Watching some of the idiots being Interviewed on telly tonight, laughing and joking about their shenanigans, one may ask the question how on earth did some of these make Universal level.

Caveat he wasn’t forces was he?

Very sad but how are the university to blame in any way? Just how are they supposed to stop things like this happening?

Really sorry to hear this but it isn’t the fault of the university. I was a student, I listened to the ‘drink responsibly’ campaigns but it didn’t make me change my drinking behaviour. Thankfully I did know when to stop, as did my mates. Rest in peace Ed.

Ridiculous that so called Education establishments still encourage this BLOODY RIDICULOUS OUT DATED BEHAVIOUR. CRASS STUPIDITY.

Who serves up 100 triple vodkas in one round and still feels like a responsible bartender / owner?

Why is this the University's fault? He's over 18, which is the legal age to drink alcohol. I'm sorry, but he's responsible for his own wellbeing, not the University.

Did the university pour alcohol down his throat as he objected? Somehow I doubt it. Individuals need to take responsibility for their actions, and the results of them. Too much “it wasn’t his fault, he just did the stupid act” mentality”.

he drank alcohol he dint need to ,his choice ,so why blame the university,

It was HIS choice- HIS responsibility and he BLEW IT. GAME OVER INSERT COIN.

Why is it the University fault I doubt they mixed the drinks and encouraged any initiation ceremony. The bars/pubs must share some responsibility for keeping serving drinks even though people buying the drinks are quite clearly “bladdered”

R I P dude. College Sucks.

And they police this how ?

Surely, personal responsibility also comes into it.

So sad and so unnecessary. Can’t imagine how his family feel , sincere condolences to them.

carter_harry99 soon

If he dies, he dies

Not University fault.

Are we going to make Alcohol a Class A drug now as well?
