A patchwork of policies is emerging across Alberta, with rules varying by school division, rather than by the status of the pandemic in any given area

Alberta’s government argued local officials know what is best for their communities. Ms. Wilson believes the province is better equipped to synthesize the science and capable of adjusting the guidelines for certain areas if the data demands it. Premier Jason Kenney and the governing United Conservative Party effectively bounced the file to school boards to shield themselves from the political consequences, Ms. Wilson said.“We’re not doctors. We’re not medical teams. We educate kids.

“At this stage of the pandemic, we believe such measures are best left to local authorities to decide for themselves,” Ms. LaGrange said. Last year, the provincial government implemented a mask mandate for students in Grades 4 to 12. Her office said she was not available for an interview Friday.Mr. Kenney has struggled to quell caucus dissent over restrictions and expelled two of his most outspoken critics, including Drew Barnes, the MLA who represents Cypress-Medicine Hat. He believed Mr.

Alberta counted 6,709 cases as of Thursday, including 749 new infections. This rising trend, public outcry and the most recent wave of hospital admissions in the United States forced the province earlier this month to delay plans to wind down access to COVID-19 testing and end isolation requirements for positive cases.

The provincial government’s desire to distance itself from restrictions could hamper its ambitions of a return to normal, given the hodgepodge of school rules, Mr. Sharek said.

They are incompetent. Why are we paying these so-called leaders?

CountFloyd2020 Hand off approach now means negligence. Good to know.

Government in alberta chooses not to lead, but leaves it up to educators to make the rules. It is actually sad that educators are responsible for health edicts.

Ah yes, again the UCP are too incompetent or are in too deep with the extreme-right wing supporters to have the guts to make the call for covid safety measures in school. Leaving it to the boards so they look like the bad guys, and they appease their extreme fringe members.

It’s not hands off it’s passing the buck to blame school boards! UCP is useless and utterly corrupt! Highest covid cases in Canada but dishonourable Kenney IS away on vacation! Wtaf? VoteAnythingButConservatives

A lot of rural school boards have not communicated any plan or direction to the parents either. We are completely in the dark out here and the morning school bell is imminent. What the hell are we doing?

AdrianaLaGrange is totally incompetent.

And there goes AdrianaLaGrange not doing her freaking job again. Why is this woman employed in government? She doesn’t do a damn thing for anyone other than donors.

Albertans and our children have been abandoned by jkenney, CMOH_Alberta and the Alberta_UCP NeverVoteConservative cdnpoli abpoli abed abhealth ableg COVID19AB

ccmrkroots 23% of all cases in Albarta are children and absolutely nothing is being done to make schools safe from Delta no provincial mandatory masking. Juts Nothing

It’s a disaster. Some kids will be more protected than others. Edmonton Catholic EdmCathSchools is telling kids they can take masks off while sitting at their desks in a small room with 30 kids. It is airborne! One case will lead to the entire class becoming ill. CMOH_Alberta
