2 more Florida school districts defy DeSantis order and vote for mask mandates

Two Florida counties issued mask mandates for students Wednesday, defying the ban on such mandates by Gov. Ron DeSantis and risking sanctions.

5,599 students and 316 staff members have either tested positive for Covid-19 or been exposed to the coronavirusMiami-Dade Public Schools, in the state’s largest county, also voted in favor of a mask mandate Wednesday.Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an executive order banning mask mandates in schools and threatened districts who defy the order.

Addison Davis, superintendent for the Hillsborough district, advised against a mandate and to continue to allow parents to opt-out of children wearing masks, citing the state’s penalties against the two counties during the meeting. President Joe Biden directed Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona on Wednesday to use his authority toBiden added that if governors threaten to cut salaries from educators, funds allocated throughPublic health experts were invited to the Hillsborough County meeting and answered questions from board members about the impact of a potential mask mandate. Experts agreed that masks and vaccinations were the best way to mitigate spread within schools, especially considering the scale of the district.
