Even if you set aside the health risks for unvaccinated school kids, as, it’s difficult to ignore the educational and economic consequences here. Constantly having to leave school to quarantine for one or two weeks is bad for kids who are trying to learn. It’s bad for parents who were relying on their kids being at school in order to work. And it’s bad for businesses who were counting on those parents to do their jobs instead of juggling childcare.

Logan’s parents are keeping him out of school until he is able to get the COVID-19 vaccine. “Employers have put a lot of effort into encouraging their workforce to get vaccinated, and that’s the right thing to do,” Dr. Caitlin Rivers, an infectious disease epidemiologist at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security,“But if kids are constantly having to quarantine for a week or more, and someone’s got to stay home with them, it’s not the case that having a highly vaccinated workforce will take that problem off the table,” she said.
