Call for more education after Sikh handcuffed at fair for carrying a kirpan, a ceremonial dagger

Arminder Singh called for more training for staff at tourist attractions, so families would not be asked to leave again

Mr Singh said despite them trying to explain their religion, the police were called and they handcuffed his friend shortly after they got off the ride. "I've never taken it out, I've never needed to in this country... we are very familiar with the law," he said. There are five physical symbols of faith worn by initiated Sikhs , called Kakars, each of which has a particular significance.

Removing the kirpan is a serious matter for Sikhs. It is done rarely and only under extreme circumstances - Sikhs even wear the kirpan while sleeping and bathing.Sikhs are the fifth largest faith group in Wales, with about 3,000 practicing,Mr Singh said he knew of other incidents where families had been made to leave attractions, and staff needed training so no-one else had to go through the same thing.after a Sikh family from Coventry was refused access.

I can see both sides. As staff had a duty of safety as we had several stabbings. But I understand the need a for faith symbol. A crucifix can be a weapon even a decorative ring too. Those who are narrow minded & were not in school when multi faith teaching don't know=understand

If its a ceremonial dagger, what's the ceremony he's conducting at a fair?

It's illegal to carry a weapon of any kind. No excuses.

WOW

That sikh shld be educated that it's not about him, but about how his actions may affect those around him. Everyone shld always put others ahead of oneself. And the world will be a better kinder place

Hmmmmm! I’m in two minds as the scottish highland dress has a ceremonial stabbing knife .

Why would you have one at a fair

I respect that dagger is a massive part of the Sikh costume but the law is very clear to carry a blade of any sort in public is a criminal offence and the law must be adhered to no matter what

Sikh followers ( I believe in just men, correct me if I’m wrong) are allowed to carry a kirpan by law...that was taught to me in primary school....

The kirpan is a sword or knife therefore not legal to be worn at a funfair.

Education for who? The police or for the Sikh?

It's a knife. It's illegal to carry knives.

Same rules for all if they carry we carry end of

He should have left it at home. We are in the uk not India

If I understand the reasons behind the carrying then I believe it is a very noble sentiment and should be extended to everyone.

Entirely legal. No problem in the UK with Sikh stabbings as far as I know...

The amount of ignorant gammon in these comments is truly something to behold, yet is sadly unsurprising.

I have a ceremonial gun so can I carry that ? Regardless it's illegal and he shouldn't be carrying it.

So can I carry a religious pump action shot gun?

....whilst lawful to carry it, was it really necessary to bring it to a fair....? Leave it for religious ceremonies....rather than take it to a place where families congregate

Well done in demonstrating your ignorance..🤦‍♂️

It's Rhyl...basically sums the dump up...🤦‍♂️

For the click-averse: 'While carrying a knife or sword is illegal, the kirpan can be carried by Sikhs for religious reasons as it is one of five symbols, called Kakars, initiated or baptised Sikhs wear.' (let's make an effort and read the article before commenting?)

I have no fears of worries regarding Wales police force, if anything, they try hard to cater for everyone and are considerate and polite from every encounter I had with them btw

How long is the blade?

So if some young thug had mugged him for it, could they have attacked anyone and hurt them with it? Or was it made out of cardboard? Or are you saying if you’re carrying a weapon for cultural reasons it’s okay? There are tribes who have a gun/machete culture; or is it more wokery

Do feel sorry for the police. They're damned if they do and damned if they don't.

The education they need is that Sihks are amazing people, the very definition of enriching a society. Others should look up to them to see what integration should look like. Fantastic people and culture.

How about backing the Police, carrying a dagger is illegal, simple ! The BBC have become a disgrace !

Sorry I disagree. No weapons of any kind should be carried outdoors. If it’s only intention is to be a symbol then perhaps a tiny one should be carried on his keys , necklace ect. But not a fully blown knife.

Awful lot of commenters showing exactly why there are 'calls for more education'.

That’s a symbol of a weapon. Teaching their children and others their mix with that carrying a weapon is normal and fine. Well it isn’t in Europe so this incident should be a lesson to the involved family. It was dealt appropriately as a result they were not willing to remove it

Hahaha people shouting education, he wasn't taking part in a ceremony

Why can't the carry a plastic Kirpan if its only a ceremonial dagger.

well i guess most gangs will now become sikhs problem of carrying a big knife sorted

So many dickhead comments honestly complete oxygen thieves . No idea what they are on about or read the article. I learned about the Kirpan at school in the 90's im guessing the education wasn't as good in other areas.

Well its about time the UK gov got a pair of balls and banned such things, religious or not!

More education for who?

this is the UK and a Dagger is still a wapon

A dagger is a dagger and it is a weapon. Thus why are you carrying a weapon at a fair?

It’s ceremonial in India! It’s a weapon on the uk

Law is to b followed abt dangerous knives in public end of. If come to live in UK u follow the law of the land, just the same as other countries law of the land. No if or buts.

People don’t even read the blood article ffs it’s legal they don’t tend to be sharp (cause they don’t have to) and a proper Sikh would only ever use it in self defence

Since when has anything to do with religion been used to cause harm to anyone? Oh wait, fecking EVERYTHING.

Sikhs need more education so that they do not pass on their superstitions to the civilized world. Carrying a weapon causes terror to children and women and must be prohibited for whatever reason, or allow others to carry weapons as well.

It’s supposed to be ceremonial. Was it?

It's still a weapon in a public place.

In todays climate can they ever be sure it's not going to be used as a weapon?

How about we adapt and follow the rules? Just saying…

The problem is when it not a Sikh wearing this ceremonial dagger As Sikh people are in my experience very friendly but there is always the minority who spoils it for the rest

PLEASE

They used to teach you about the 5 K's in R.E. at school.I guess they stopped doing that then.

I’d be embarrassed as well if my father thought it was good to carry a dagger/knife to the theme park.

I am in mixed minds about this, a dagger is a knife and should never be worn in a public venue, on the other hand the article mentions it's blunt and in a wood case. I am a security guard and have never heard of this practice...my instinct would be to ask the person to leave

Educate who?

It's legal here, just as it is in many countries in the world.

An open blade is an open blade

Or, maybe, just maybe, Sikhs can move with the times and not carry a large bloody knife. Religions should have the capacity to ' adjust ' to the surroundings.

The writer sounds like an expert, but wasn’t Indira Gandhi murdered by her Sikh bodyguards?

So its legal to carry and have on the park

It is still a deadly weapon, isn’t’ it? So, why the excuses? Make it a ritual not to carry around deadly weapons There will be a couple of Afghani coming who are used to carry around AK47. The might probably have to drop this habit, too

Please tell me what he was doing with a ceremonial sword at a fair. That would educate me on someone doing something they shouldn’t have been doing in the first place.

Day traders are always super intelligent with their trading stuffs and so are you SolinaChau_ thank you for handling everything with so much care. I got it big this time.🇺🇲

Maybe, just maybe...the 'education' should be for people that wish to live in the UK should abide by the law that everyone else has to follow, no exceptions or privileges.

No there shouldn't be better training. Its illegal to carry a weapon in public, doesn't matter if its ceremonial. Essentially hes saying he and other Sikhs should be exempt from the law. You dont exactly see people going going to fairs with fencing foils or ceremonial army swords
