when it endorsed a joint statement of leading maths organisations titled “Why maths must change” calling for a new approach to teaching students maths. The statement, released weeks before the draft curriculum was unveiled, said teaching content was no longer enough and students must also learn “to problem-solve, mathematise, hypothesise [and] model”.
“I haven’t been contacted by any of our members who are particularly concerned about anything [in the draft curriculum].” Education Minister Alan Tudge, who along with the state and territory education ministers is required to sign off on the final curriculum, said AMSI was a respected organisation and he would listen closely to their feedback.
“We went through a very comprehensive consultation process and the message from the members was very clear. They were alarmed at the changes in the curriculum,” Professor Marchant said.
