Each week, Dr Kirstin Ferguson tackles questions on the workplace, career and leadership in her advice column “
That is a tricky question to answer because every job and career is so different! Anecdotally, I would think on most occasions , someone with a degree will be paid more than someone with a diploma. Yet I know that is not always the case, and in many people’s careers it is not even the most relevant factor. Recent data comparing the median income of Australian university graduates with vocational education and training graduates shows the results are pretty line-ball.
At my workplace, if someone is working remotely it is only ever referred to as “working from home”, leaving little room for other possible working locations to be included in the definition. How can we change people viewing remote work like this and the old stigma that comes from working outside an office? For many traditionally office-based jobs, whether you are at home, working from a van travelling around Australia, from a hotel or a shared office in a different city, should not matter.
kirstinferguson Not many degrees give you an actual professional qualification. University education comes into its own when you hit Masters studies or short courses after gaining real life experience in your field, not the other way around.Look at the HR train wreck pervading business now for eg
kirstinferguson Better than without I am sure

kirstinferguson Media studies degrees lead to some of the country's finest baristas.
kirstinferguson No, university degrees aren't worth the paper they're printed on. Learn actual skills and maybe pick up a trade. We're always going to need plumbers. Gender pronoun specialists and critical race theorists, not so much.
kirstinferguson absolutely
kirstinferguson They should..and trades are over paid
kirstinferguson Depends on the degree. Lots of trades people will match or better a uni degree salary
kirstinferguson Who gives a toss about University. All this nonsense about needing a University degree has driven away skilled labor. All you need to know is how to invest and manage money. bitcoin fixes this.
kirstinferguson Diverting the focus outside of money. What about roles? Who has on average has the more important roles in society? Can non-degree holders shape the laws of the country? Do you need a degree to treat medical issues? Who gets to teach children? Who gets to decide what goes on TV?
kirstinferguson Not immediately but later I career
kirstinferguson No
