Mr Vaile’s appointment was bound to be controversial. Newcastle is the world’s biggest coal port, but staff and protesters had a right to ask whether his appointment was consistent with the university’s pledge to be carbon neutral by 2025 and to divest from fossil fuel companies that were not committed to a low-carbon future. But there’s a precedent here that may prove worrying if a vast range of views or positions are deemed unacceptable.
This is a complex area for universities. They must foster an environment where ideas of all kinds can be debated and challenged, where shibboleths on all sides are sometimes challenged. That is the notion of academic freedom; it’s how we know the world is not flat.
But the irony is that the SMH INDEPENDENT ALWAYS is a cancel culture. Many articles are ideologically one way; the other side not given an airing. You only need to go to Jacquline Maley and Jemina (?) who both write with hate for males to see this but it is in other areas too.
No debate is harmful unless those who think it is harmful are sociopaths
