It revived calls on the Pope and the Catholic Church to apologise for the abuse and violence suffered by the students at such boarding schools, where children were forcibly assimilated into the dominant culture of settlers. Perry Bellegarde, national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, said the news was “absolutely tragic, but not surprising”.

Seems as though this was policy across the globe within these organisations. Someone, somewhere at a meeting decided to do this and they all went along with it. Still don't understand how these sites weren't crime scenes...
