In a radical move from traditional school hours, the NSW government will encourage principals to work with parents and students to find innovative ways to provide flexibility for families. Should Victoria try ditching the 9am-3pm school day too?

The traditional 9am to 3pm school day will be overhauled as the NSW government starts trials in primary schools to stagger start and finish times to boost productivity and flexibility for families.

Schools will have the option of taking part in trials, which will include a range of measures such as earlier starts or later finishes, as well as extended hours of a day. NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said the “status quo is not always the best approach” when it comes to education. “This project will allow us to establish a range of alternative make-ups of the school day that work.”

“The reality is that the traditional school day, like the 9 to 5 workday, is a 20th century concept which may not always be relevant for schools in the 21st century,” Ms Mitchell said. Ms Mitchell said the government had already created an extra 10,000 before and after school places, which was a 2019 election commitment.

Teachers could do shift work no worries but learning would need to be matched to best times fir individual children and not parent working hours. Of course many more teachers would need to be employed to cover the hours but also school leaders to cover management. No big deal.

How about funding public education properly as the number one priority!

Should have gone down the Finland track years ago - by neither governments nor the plebs are open-minded enough.

We tried to extend the school hours (to give flexibility) but couldn’t because of bus time tables.

Thinking about the drop off and pickup times if multiple children in a family.

AlexSmithSMH They already do this. Sometimes it is for the convenience of bus companies. AlexSmithSMH A 9-3 school day. That implies teachers’ only work these hours. If only! Why not introduce broken shifts? Teachers could start at 7 in the morning and teach until 11, mark and plan lessons until 2 in the afternoon, teach again from 2 to 6 and then go home and prep more work. AlexSmithSMH smitchellmlc I thought an aim of the government was to attract better quality teachers? This shows the government doesn’t give a shit about teachers…good luck recruiting anyone. Let’s lift educational standards by treating teachers like baby sitters.
